Sima Qian

Sima Qian inherited his father's post as court astronomer and completed a history of China from legendary times to his own day. At the court of Emperor Wu of Han he defended a defeated general and was punished for it; he chose to live, he wrote, so that the book could be finished. The work became the template for every later dynastic history.
